Description

Bethel School District in Eugene, Oregon, is seeking qualified candidates for a Nutrition Services Director Position.

Nature of Work

The Nutrition Services plans, organizes, coordinates and directs the nutrition program for all District schools and ensures safe, clean and efficient operations. This position requires independent judgment and analysis; ensures proper regulation of workflow, frequently involving heavy volume and emergent situations; provides leadership, supervision, evaluation, training and direction for assigned staff; and high level organization.

 

The average daily breakfast count is 2,000; the average daily lunch count is 3,200; and the average daily afternoon meals/snacks count is 250. Four school sites participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable program. The average daily participation in Summer Meals is 300.  

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

These duties are illustrative only. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Plans, directs and reviews the work for approximately 60 nutrition staff members
  • Monitors the nutrition program to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations
  • Adjusts work assignments and schedules to maintain adequate staffing levels
  • Hires, trains and evaluates employees
  • Establishes standards for the professional development of the district’s nutrition personnel and oversees professional development of all nutrition personnel
  • Develops cost-effective menus based on customer preference that maintain nutrition integrity and meet all local, state, and federal guidelines and regulations
  • Establishes, maintains and assesses compliance with the district HACCP Food Safety Plan
  • Writes specifications and purchases food, supplies and equipment using federal procurement regulations
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive nutrition education and promotion program using school cafeterias as learning laboratories
  • Prepares and administers department budget and assesses financial performance
  • Prepares, maintains and submits district, state, and federal reports in a timely manner
  • Provides leadership to  district wellness team and monitors local wellness policy requirements
  • Provides leadership role in districts Farm to School Program
  • Researches, writes and administers grants that support the food service program and the local wellness policy
  • Collaborates with community partners and participates in local and statewide committees
  • Plans menus for students with special dietary needs
  • Performs other duties as assigned 

Supervision

This position reports directly to the Business Services Director. Work is performed in accordance with appropriate state and federal guidelines to ensure learning and working environments are safe and clean. The Business Services Director and District administrators will evaluate work for the quality of the Nutrition Services program and overall results achieved.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of the job the Nutrition Services Director is regularly required to

  • Stand, walk, bend, reach, and stoop throughout the day.  
  • Frequently lift, or move kitchen equipment, tools and food supplies.
  • Open, close and adjust handles, knobs and other mechanisms.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent educational experience, with academic major in  specific areas: food and nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in any academic major and State-recognized certificate for school nutrition directors; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in any academic major and at least 2 years of relevant school nutrition programs experience; OR
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent educational experience, with academic major in specific areas,* and at least 2 years of relevant school nutrition programs experience.
  • 8 hours of advanced food safety training within the past five years or within 30 days of hire (ServeSafe or ICN Food Safety in Schools Certificate)

  • Child nutrition and dietary needs
  • Accounting and record keeping systems and  budget procedures
  • Federal procurement practices and procedures
  • Local, state and federal laws, rules, and policies
  • Advanced knowledge of nutrient analysis, menu planning, inventory management and purchasing software. Competent in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Docs

  

Salary and Benefits

8 hours/day and 260 days/year

Salary dependent upon experience
