Description

Bethel School District is seeking qualified applicants for an 8 hour per day Kitchen Coordinator for the Nutrition Services program.

Nature of Work

A Nutrition Service Coordinator performs kitchen management and nutrition service lead work for Bethel School District.  Duties include directing and working with Nutrition Service Assistants in preparing school meals, ordering food, maintaining program records, or coordinating the operation of a major section of a large operation such as the high school à la carte program. Work involves preparing and serving meals in conformance with USDA and Oregon Department of Education minimum nutritional quality and quantity standards. Positions of this class may also work before shifts of co-workers begin, preparing food for the next day, or preparing and serving breakfast.

       

Examples of Work

These duties are illustrative only.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Participates in menu planning; organizes food preparation tasks and kitchen work duties based on menu requirements; ensures meals are appealing, nutritionally well-balanced, and meet government standards.
  • Leads and participates in breakfast and lunch preparation; ensures needed ingredients are available; prepares part of the meal, such as the main dish, and completes any tasks not assigned to subordinates; and ensures nutrition service schedules are met.
  • Works with Nutrition Service Assistants to serve the breakfast and lunch meals; makes sure steam table, dispensers, trays, plates and utensils and the serving areas are ready; serves the proper portion for each student; puts away leftover foods and cleans serving area.
  • Leads and participates in cleaning up the kitchen, equipment, plates, pots and pans; periodically cleans the storeroom, refrigerator or freezer; and ensures that health and safety regulations governing kitchen operations are followed.
  • Orders food and kitchen supplies from the District's warehouse based on menu and inventory needs; restocks storeroom shelves and rotates foodstuffs; purchases weekly food items for à la carte program.
  • Trains and assigns work to nutrition service assistants, and contributes to the Nutrition Services Manager's performance evaluation of nutrition service assistants.
  • Keeps various records of meals served and food items used each day; keeps a daily count on reduced price meals and full-price meals served; and prepares other reports as required.

Supervision

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Nutrition Services Manager and is reviewed through periodic reports and on-site inspections for effective and efficient operation of the school kitchen.

 

Selection Factors

  • Knowledge of the purpose and safe operation of equipment used in a commercial kitchen.
  • Knowledge of the safety and sanitary requirements of a food preparation and service operation, and the necessary precautionary measures.
  • Knowledge of USDA and Oregon Department of Education requirements regarding serving quantities and nutritional components of the subsidized meals program.
  • Ability to work independently and delegate responsibility.
  • Ability to work from written menus and recipes and to adapt standard recipes in preparing dishes for a large number of people while adhering to nutrition and sanitation guidelines.
  • Ability to estimate food needs in advance, maintain inventories, and to order sufficient food items.
  • Ability to plan, schedule and direct the activities of subordinates in a manner that will result in cost effective personnel management and use of resources.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, and apply safe lifting techniques in lifting and carrying cases of food.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare periodic reports on meals served, food amounts used, and other related information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, co-workers and supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or the equivalent.  One year of experience at a level equivalent to a nutrition service assistant which provides experience in meal preparation and kitchen management on a temporary or training basis.  Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training which ensures the ability to perform the work may be substituted for the experience. 

       

Special Requirements

Possession or ability to obtain an Oregon Food Handlers Card within six weeks after starting work.
