Nature of Work

An Educational Assistant II provides individual and small group support and personal assistance, often in a standard or special purpose educational program, to students with distinct and exceptional educational needs and challenges as determined by a certificated specialist.  The primary purpose of positions in this class, which distinguishes it from positions of other classes, is to screen and assess the educational needs of students, provide instructional assistance to students in a classroom, and charting and recording results.  Clerical and word processing or computer data base updating duties may be assigned to positions as time permits, but are not considered primary tasks and do not require a large percentage of time.

A position of this class may be assigned full-time to a student with a physical impairment that requires the employee to assist with school tasks the student cannot perform, such as attending class and taking notes; carrying books; adapting written school materials; personal cleanliness and hygiene; administering medication; setting up or operating specially adapted equipment; food preparation and feeding the student; and assisting the student to communicate with teachers, classmates, and others.

A position of this class may tutor students, individually or in small groups, providing instructional assistance in a variety of subjects or courses; administers and scores standardized tests; and maintains student records in conformance with government regulations.

An Educational Assistant I may be assigned classroom duties which involve a variety of clerical, word processing, computer spreadsheet and data base, typing, duplication and similar tasks in order to relieve a teacher of more routine, day to day classroom duties.  Duties outside of the classroom include supervising playground and cafeteria activities.
